  1. 1939: A SUMMARY OF THE YEAR

  3. Sept 1st: 48 German divisions including six armoured invade Poland.
  4.           Plan Case White heralds start of Second World war.
  5. Sept 3rd: Britain and France decalre war on Germany as Germans
  6.           smash through Polish armies and Warsaw is heavily
  7.           bombed.
  8. Sept 4th: RAF attack German navy in Kiel.          
  9. Sept 5th: Germans break though to Vistual River and Polish
  10.           Government abandons Warsaw for Lublin.
  11. Sept  8th:The Battle of Bzura and assault on Warsaw.
  12. Sept 17th:Russians invade Poland from the East.
  13. Sept 27th:Warsaw surrenders.
  14. Oct  5th: German victory parade in Warsaw.
  15. Oct 14th: German U-boat sinks HMS Royal Oak at Scapa Flow.
  16. Nov 30th: Soviets renounce non-agression pact and invade Finland.
  17.           Finns although badly outnumbered stage a brilliant defence.
  18.           By end of December, the Soviets have lost 27,500 dead as
  19.           opposed to only 2,700 on the Finnish side.
  20. Dec 17th: German battleship Graf Spee is scuttled by her capitain
  21.           in the River Plate estuary,South America.
